PerformanceManagement
Three of the original six people in the group as we started described their situation where they have issues with individual performance. The team's organization is very flat, so everyone provides performance input for everyone. There is no clear role/person that has responsibility for dealing with individual performance issues. While we discussed how many of the issues are not peculiar to XP/Agile, we did discuss some of the concepts/practices that can be applied. First, we discussed the roles of Coach and Project Manager, and which of those has responsibility for performance issues. We agreed that the Coach has responsibility for identifying and resolving more "technical" performance issues (are we following the practices, are we delivering), it was not as clear who has the responsibility for identifying and resolving more "personal" performance issues. When addressing the issue of "impact on the team", we think that is primarily the coach's responsiblity. When addressing the issue of "impact on the individual", we think this is primarily the PM's responsibility.

We discussed one groups technique of "Same As, More Of, Less Of (SAMOLO)", where periodic feedback is given on individual performance. While the group that described it does this ~quarterly, we discussed how this could also be done on each iteration boundary as part of a retrospective.

We discussed how some people simply don't work well in self-directed teams, and this will be a barrier for some people when trying to fit in an Agile environment.

We discussed the role of the "Daily Meeting" in resolving perfomance issues. Some thought that Daily Meetings should be a place to identify barriers, including personal performance issues, and some disagreed.

We discussed different reward mechanisms that encourage high-performing teams, such as bonus systems.
